A Little LUV History
The Little Truck That Started Something Big
The Chevrolet LUV — short for Light Utility Vehicle — made its North American debut in 1972.
Built by Isuzu and marketed by Chevrolet, the LUV was Chevrolet's answer to the growing popularity of compact imported pickups. It was based on the Isuzu Faster and gave American buyers a smaller, more economical alternative to the full-size pickups of the day.
And people liked them.
Chevrolet sold 21,098 LUV pickups in its first year, and sales climbed dramatically throughout the 1970s. By 1979, sales peaked at more than 100,000 LUVs in a single year, helped in part by the introduction of four-wheel drive.
The LUV continued through the 1982 model year in the United States before Chevrolet introduced its own compact pickup, the Chevrolet S-10.
Over its roughly 10-year run in North America, hundreds of thousands of Chevy LUVs were sold, making this little pickup one of the memorable compact trucks of the 1970s and early '80s.
